How to move to Malta
Moving to Malta is mostly a document exercise. The single thing that delays people is an incomplete file: Identita does not start processing until everything is in, and a straightforward case still takes around 30 working days once it's complete. This guide gets you to a complete, submission-ready file.
First: which pathway is yours?
There is no single "move to Malta" permit — the route depends on your citizenship and why you're moving:
- EU / EEA / Swiss citizens register Ordinary Residence with Identita and receive an eResidence document — no visa, but the file still has to be complete.
- Non-EU nationals with a Maltese job apply for a Single Permit (work + residence combined).
- Non-EU remote workers earning from outside Malta apply for the Nomad Residence Permit.
Not sure which is you?
Answer a few questions and we'll point you to the right pathway and build your document checklist.
