EU Ordinary Residence

EU / EEA / Swiss citizens moving to Malta

EU/EEA/Swiss nationals living in Malta for more than 3 months register their residence with Identita and receive an eResidence document.

What you'll need

Your exact list depends on your situation — the checklist personalises this. The full set of possible documents:

  • Proof of Malta address (rental/lease agreement)

A rental or lease agreement for your Malta address. Required for first-time entrants to the Malta labour market; typically the first document you sort.

  • Passport or EU national ID (bio-data page)

Original and copy of your passport or EU national ID card, bio-data page only.

  • Employment contract (<6 months) or Jobsplus employment history

Original and copy of either an employment contract no older than 6 months, OR your Jobsplus employment history. Your employer files the Jobsplus Engagement Form. Directors/Managers MUST submit Jobsplus employment history.

With a fixed-term contract, the eResidence ID is granted only for the contract's duration (not the default 5 years). Plan your renewal before the contract ends.

  • VAT, tax and National Insurance registration certificates

Self-employed applicants must provide VAT registration, tax registration and National Insurance registration certificates.

  • Proof of stable income or sufficient funds + sickness insurance

Proof of stable income or sufficient resources in the bank plus comprehensive sickness insurance covering Malta.

  • Enrolment proof + insurance + proof of funds

Proof of enrolment at a licensed Maltese institution, comprehensive sickness insurance, and proof of sufficient funds.

  • Application Form A

Application for Residence Documentation (Form A).

  • GDPR Form

Signed GDPR consent form submitted with the application.

Good to know

  • Apply via the Identita Expatriates Unit Portal.
  • Processing takes approximately 30 working days.
  • Documents not in English or Maltese require an official translation.
  • You can only start work once an Interim Receipt or the eResidence document is issued.
  • The eResidence document is generally valid for 5 years (or the contract term, if your employment contract is fixed-term).
